Our amazing body human: Our liver et al...
The human body has different organs that fulfill multiple functions and that help us interact with the environment. Today, I want to talk to you about the liver, an organ that is present in both humans and vertebrate animals.
With respect to its anatomical
characteristics, the liver has a triangular shape, brown red color, smooth
surface and soft consistency. In the human adult it measures on average 26 cm
wide, 15 cm high and 8 cm thick at the level of the right lobe, its approximate
weight is 1.5 kg and is located in the upper right part of the abdomen, below
the diaphragm .
It performs unique and vital functions,
including the production of bile that is necessary for the digestion of food,
the synthesis of plasma proteins, detoxifying function and storage of vitamins
and glycogen. In addition, it removes many substances from the blood that may
be harmful to the body, transforming them into other harmless ones.
This last function is very relevant in my
area of study, since the liver is the one who performs the detoxification of
the blood, including drugs, which are metabolized to favor its subsequent
elimination.
However, there are many types of liver
diseases, among which we can mention, hepatitis, cirrhosis, cancer, among
others. And although symptoms may vary, these often include swelling of the
abdomen and legs, changes in the color of urine and feces, yellowish eyes.
The absence of liver or the failure of its
functioning is incompatible with life, it is for this reason that it is very
important to take care of the liver, either with healthier diets, avoid excess
alcohol, avoid the use of drugs, and make use more aware of medications.
